San Elijo Lagoon- Annie's Canyon
Looking for a trail experience that's a little different from the mountains and fire roads we often associate with San Diego trail running? This week's Friday Trailhead takes us to the scenic trails of San Elijo Lagoon and Annie's Canyon in Solana Beach. Whether you're visiting for the first time or returning to one of North County's most unique trail systems, San Elijo Lagoon offers a beautiful combination of coastal views, winding dirt trails, wildlife, and one of the most distinctive trail features in San Diego County.
The reserve features a network of trails that weave throughout the lagoon, offering runners and hikers a chance to experience a diverse coastal ecosystem while enjoying relatively gentle terrain. The highlight for many visitors is Annie's Canyon, a narrow sandstone slot canyon that feels completely different from anywhere else in the county. The short climb through the canyon leads to an overlook with incredible views of the lagoon, surrounding hills, and coastline.
For first-time visitors, this trail system is approachable and family-friendly, making it a great introduction to trail running or hiking. For those returning, the lagoon trails provide a perfect setting for easy miles, recovery runs, or a relaxing outdoor adventure.
