If you’ve never run Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, this is one of the best places in San Diego County to start. And if it’s been a while, this is your reminder of why it’s one of the most popular and runnable trail systems around.

Los Peñasquitos Canyon is known for its wide, smooth dirt trails and gentle rolling terrain, making it one of the most beginner-friendly trail runs in the region. It’s the perfect place to log easy miles, build distance, or just enjoy a relaxed run without worrying about technical footing. At the same time, the full canyon stretch offers enough distance to keep even experienced runners coming back for longer efforts.

Best Parking & Access

West Side (Coastal Access):

  • Sorrento Valley Blvd (Lopez Canyon Trail Parking Lot)

  • Best for a gradual, scenic run heading inland

  • Easy access to the main canyon trail

East Side (Inland Access):

  • Black Mountain Rd (Canyonside Park)

  • Shorter route to the waterfall

  • Great for quicker out-and-back runs

Estimated Mileage

  • Full Canyon (West to East): ~7–7.5 miles one way

  • Out & Back Options: ~3 to 14+ miles depending on turnaround

  • Typical Waterfall Run: ~4–7 miles round trip depending on start

Waterfall Access (Must-See Spot)

  • Best Access Point: Black Mountain Rd Trailhead (East Side)

  • Distance to Waterfall: ~1.5–2 miles one way (~3–4 miles RT)

The waterfall is one of the highlights of the canyon, especially after rain. It’s an easy, rewarding destination that makes this trail system perfect for both new runners and those looking for a shorter scenic run.

What makes Peñasquitos Canyon special is how accessible it is. It’s a place where new trail runners can feel comfortable right away, and experienced runners can stack miles without overthinking the route. Wide-open trails, shaded sections, and a peaceful canyon setting make it a go-to for off-season miles.
