If you’re looking for one of the most iconic trail running experiences in San Diego, it’s time to explore Mission Trails Regional Park and take on the legendary North and South Fortuna Mountains. Whether it’s your first trip to the Fortunas or you’re heading back for another climb, these trails offer some of the best training terrain in the county.

The Fortuna Mountains are known for steep climbs, rocky terrain, challenging stair sections, and panoramic summit views that reward every ounce of effort. Unlike smoother fire road climbs, the Fortunas feel rugged and adventurous, making them a favorite for runners training for mountain races, elevation gain, or simply looking to push themselves on the trails.

For first-timers, expect a challenging but rewarding experience with a variety of route options that can be adjusted for distance and difficulty. For returning runners, the Fortunas are one of those places that never get easier… but somehow always keep you coming back for more.
