Looking for a trail system that combines runnable terrain, coastal breezes, and one of the most unique natural landmarks in North County? This week's Friday Trailhead takes us to Lake Calavera in Carlsbad.

Whether you've never explored the trails around Lake Calavera before or it's been a while since your last visit, this local favorite offers something for everyone. With a network of rolling dirt trails, scenic overlooks, and the iconic volcanic peak at its center, Lake Calavera is one of the most accessible and versatile trail destinations in San Diego County.

The preserve surrounds an ancient volcanic plug known as Mount Calavera, creating a landscape unlike anywhere else in the region. Runners can enjoy smooth, flowing trails around the lake, tackle the climb to the summit for panoramic views, or combine multiple trail segments for a longer adventure. It's a great option for beginners looking to explore trail running for the first time, while experienced runners can use the rolling terrain and hill climbs for quality workouts.

For first-time visitors, the summit is a must-see. The short climb rewards you with incredible views stretching across North County, the Pacific Ocean, and inland hills. For returning runners, Lake Calavera remains one of the best places to fit in a quick trail session without sacrificing scenery or elevation.
