If you’re looking to test your limits, it’s time to take, El Cajon Mountain Trail, better known to most runners as El Cap. Whether it’s your first attempt or a return to unfinished business, this is one of the toughest and most rewarding trail runs in San Diego County.

El Capitan isn’t just a run — it’s a challenge. Known for its relentless climbs, false summits, and exposed terrain, this route demands patience, strength, and smart pacing. The trail rolls up and down multiple times before the final push to the summit, making it just as mentally tough as it is physical.

For first-timers, expect a true test of endurance — this is not your average out-and-back. For those coming back, you already know… it’s about chasing a stronger effort, better pacing, or simply conquering the mountain again.

Parking & Trailhead Access

  • Located off Wildcat Canyon Road (Lakeside area)

  • Dedicated parking lot at the trailhead

  • Additional roadside parking may be available on busy days

Estimated Mileage

Out & Back: ~10–11 miles total

To Summit: ~5–5.5 miles one way

Expect longer effort times due to terrain and elevation

Terrain

  • Rocky fire roads and rugged singletrack

  • Constant rolling climbs (multiple false summits)

  • Steep, sustained elevation gain (~4,000 ft total)

  • Fully exposed, little to no shade

  • Technical footing in sections

El Capitan is one of those trails that earns its reputation. It’s not about speed — it’s about effort, grit, and staying consistent from start to finish. The summit views are incredible, but it’s the journey getting there that makes this route unforgettable.

If you’re building toward bigger trail goals, this is one of the best training grounds in San Diego. And if you’re just looking to push yourself in a new way, El Cap will deliver.
